It isn't as if the Ft. Griswold massacre was the only British atrocity during the Revolution. There were the disgraceful prison ships in NY harbor. The burning and looting of coastal towns. Setting the frontier aflame with their loyal native tribes including the murder and scalping of Jane McCrae and the depredations of Butcher Tarleton. Among others.
I love England and English history and all that they brought to the world. But they were the epitome of colonizers and while they truly uplifted many of their subjects it wasn't always through persuasion and diplomacy
They weren't the worst of the lot (I personally think Belgium, Russia or Japan hold that crown). The French were pretty despicable in the way they ran their colonies. There again you have Mughals, the Turks, etc. SPain and Portugal was fairly terrible as well. The British Empire was mainly run by the Scottish rather than the English btw. For example, Canada was run by a small group of Scottish men. Hong Kong was again Scottish run. To call the British Empire England erases the Scottish contribution which was massive.
Many of the Scots had no choice -- think the Highland Clearances or the loading of boats on the Western Isles (eg Barra). There again, it was a mini Ice Age and the land was unproductive. People were starving. Classism remained akin to feudalism. In Lewis where Trump's mother was from, it was feudal even in the 20th century.
If you look at India -- Hindu Nationalism does not allow for the British to have done anything right. It also does not allow for the Mughals to have made any positive contribution either. The truth is far more subtle. And of course the manner in which Britain pulled out (had no choice really) resulted in a massive population upheaval, over a million dead and ongoing repercussions in Kashmir etc.
The major mystery is how Britain who never had enough of a population to control such a vast swathe managed to do it for so long.
Your last paragraph is a great observation . Human kind via human nature has been nasty and brutish. Perhaps we are better today . But certainly not in parts of Africa or in Iran. HAPPY 4th. Curious to hear from.you how the brits are viewing today from across the pond

It is a real mixture in the papers. Mostly people are just celebrating the American experiment. Lots of people just ignoring as they always do.
That Trump is trying to make himself front and centre is causing some disquiet. I keep telling people -- mostly people are too busy doing their own thing to notice his antics. Enjoy the 4th.
Mexico will most likely win. The whole thing in the UK is a cock up. Starmer agreed longer licensing hours which means until 5 am. Then they were going to alter the time because of thunderstorms and now we are back to 1 am. England would need a miracle to win.
I hopeful for Norway against Brazil (just because it would be amusing) and of course if by some miracle the US are able to beat Belgium, but the US won't have their best striker. It was hilarious that Cape Verde nearly beat Argentina (the red hot favourites)

Oh, I know. Th campaigns in the Carolinas were particularly brutal. Ft Griswold is interesting because it was led by Benedict Arnold.
