If you are interested in hoaxes and false accusations of racism, you will want to read the leaked letter from Kate Clanchy to the Society of Authors. After losing a great deal of her livelihood thanks to a twitter storm accusation of racism, she hired a team of private investigators to discover the truth — namely that a far-right bot picked up on the main accuser’s wording (whiteness) and created a tweet which resulted in a pile-on. It was nothing to do with anything Clanchy or Sir Phillip Pullman had tweeted or indeed said. The letter is fairly jaw dropping.

If Musk is right about the number of bots on Twitter then we should just call it what it is: an outrage machine that monetizes attention and greatly enriches a handful of people.
Organizations should have rules in place that you don’t take an internal conflict and resolve it in this ridiculous public forum. I realize this isn’t exactly an internal organizational conflict, but if all are members of the society then it technically counts as one.
I hope Clanchy receives justice, if there is such a thing in this case. What about her career now? I feel terrible for her. What’s the end game to the outrage/hysteria culture?
