In a surprise to basically no one, Penny Mordaunt shortly before 2 pm conceded that it was not in the country’s interest for her to continue challenging for the position of Prime Minister.
Wish we had the exact Interim plan Your NHS is using. Liked the part about people going on treatments through research projects only. Also liked they weren't gonna go along with people just sourcing their own hormones off the internet and all-a them. Be interested what the research turns up.
And for your Cabinet update --Suella Braverman has returned as Home Secretary, surely payoff for her getting Sunak in and submarining Johnson. Kemi gets International Trade and joy of joys -- Women and Equalities minister. SHe can do a lot of good. No idea where the new Education Secretary Gillian Keegan stands on GI in schools but I rather think they will have to pay attention to the NHS commissioning report.
"He is the first person of East African Asian descent to do so."
OK, I'll bite. What is "East African Asian" in the heritage department? I don't think the US has such a category (though God knows we've got plenty of others, including sub-heritage classes).
Thanks
P.S. thanks for the NHS report. Looks like Britain and the Scandinavian countries are getting their acts together.
Many Indians provided the backbone of the Empire -- running shops etc. particularly in Africa. Think Sowell's 2nd essay in the Black Rednecks and White Liberals about ethnic middlemen and how the elites use them. Sunak's family emigrated to Britain from E Africa rather than from India. Suella Braveman's family were from W Africa (I think Uganda -- they were kicked out in the late 60s with nothing). So real children of the Empire as it were.
Thanks. That may be generally acceptable in Britain, though it seems to me that in the modern world, such descriptions are just invitation to perpetuate identity ideology. It echoes some of the craziness of the US ethnic descriptions, which have legal effect here. If anyone has a passion for understanding how one's ancestors can advantage or disadvantage oneself, I am reading a very good (but also very legal-academic) book by David Bernstein, a professor atGeorge Mason School of Law. "Classified: The Untold Story of Racial Classification in America," traces the state of play today in US law related to ethnic classifications, countries of ancestral origin, etc.
I may just be old school, or an old guy yelling at clouds, but it all strikes me as a major waste of attention and recipe for social conflict.
But, here's to Rishi! I wish him well after Liz's disastrous tenure.
In the UK, the trend is not to call people BAME (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic) because it makes it seem like everyone has the same experience. And then you get the oversimplification like thinking all black people in Britain eat jerk chicken (a Carribean dish) and not popular say in Ghana.
Mostly people will call him, Indian-British but that hides the fact that India did not allow African-Indians back into India in the 1960s and early 1970s. Ted Heath allowed that immigration into the UK and they have added so much to modern British culture. It was an aspect of modern British life that I didn't know that much about until I moved over here.
Jerk chicken is great -- no Caribbean roots either. I just love different foods. One of the great things about the growth of Caribbean cookery in the UK is that you can now find hot chiles and other great spices. When I first moved over here, the situation was dire and I did so miss certain foods that I learned to cook Mexican from scratch.

Thanks. I did not know the Indian in Africa and Ted Heath history. I do love jerk chicken but have no Caribbean roots!
