I’m so pleased for Prince Edward and his lovely wife. Will his son James automatically inherit the title? Or does it have to be conferred on an individual? (I hope I’m using the right terminology; if not, please excuse an interested but ignorant Yank.)

He gets it for the duration of his life and it returns to the Crown on his death. It is a canny move as then it will be probably within Prince William's gift to confer it on one of his children in due course.

When the Duke of Edinburgh dies, his son who is now the Earl of Wessex will become the Earl of Wessex and Forfar. This (not behind a paywall) gives the details. https://archive.is/M9FvS

Thanks! That was a good article. I find the whole title thing fascinating but am often stymied by the complex rules involved. (But I do pride myself on knowing more about it than the average American…although my knowledge + $3.65 will get you a latte at Starbucks.)

I’m reading Time to Think and it goes to show how daily overlooking and denying problems amounts to a colossal mess. Will check out Hags as well. At a former job, a younger female colleague made a comment about the “old ladies,” meaning the middle aged women, in one department. I said to her when she keeps speaking like that, she fosters prejudice against her future self. She was actually taken aback but maybe thought more about it.

You will like Hags --Victoria Smith is v funny and she makes an excellent point about how society erases older women. Some of whom will not keep quiet! Some of the nonsense with Waterstones proves her point.

Time to Think is so interesting. I could not believe that some of the people only had 15 min group appointments and then were referred onwards to the adult clinic who thought GIDS had done their job! It is the lifetime medical implications of something which cannot be objectively proved. Is some of trans a psychosomatic to other stresses?

Do read Cates report. What is being taught in UK schools is pretty horrifying.

How this extreme sex Ed got passed and into schools is mind boggling. There have to be teachers who are uncomfortable with it. It’s massively inappropriate. Extremists on both sides are ruining so much in our society.

I suspect there are teachers who are deeply uncomfortable. Why Head Teachers did not say no I have no idea. The Isle of Man has now paused all sex ed classes pending a review.

I do not think most adults would be comfortable with discussing their sexual fantasies in the workplace. It is not right to make 13 year olds do that. But that could just be me and I am a woman of a certain age (aka a Hag). LOL

On a positive note, the Guardian who had been ignoring Time to Think has finally done a review of it. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/mar/10/time-to-think-by-hannah-barnes-review-inside-britains-only-clinic-for-trans-children?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

“But that could just be me and I am a woman of a certain age (aka a Hag). LOL”

I’d rather be a hag at this point than anything else! Tell that to Waterstones! Lol And since I’m in that age group I suppose I am!

I think this is why Hags has hit the zeitgeist over here. A lot of middle -aged women are feel the same way and are tired of being told to sit down and keep quiet.

Turns out I'm a hag. And I'm not even a woman! AFAIK (As Far As I Know ;-).

Who knows these days?

Another outstanding lineup, Ma'am. As always, very much appreciated.

As I've "said" on numerous occasions, You folks across the pond are light-years ahead of us in the US. Nobody over here knows *what's* being taught in the equivalent of Your RSE. I suppose it's all over the board but, no doubt, the things the articles highlighted are taught here as well. All I can say is: go Ofsted.

That about the books? Ask me if I believe Waterstones' claim they've been offering the books.

I haven't read either book yet. Added to list. I was only half-kidding when I "said" I was a hag.

Finally, the "non-criminal hate crime?" I'm having a hard time understanding the necessity of even having such-a thing. That's just me.

Once again, TYTY Michelle. Hope new book is progressing along, and partial as well.

It is just amazing. No one over here really knew either until Miriam Cates started collating it.

I am hoping Rishi Sunak will force the DfE to do something (the DfE are fairly captured though).

The Non crime hate incidents are hugely controversial. It is v Thought Police. Harry Millar worked hard to get them to stop doing it, but they have not stopped. Suella Braverman as HOme Secretary is ordering them to stop. Her piece was excellent. Of course there are some who say that people need to respect rather than to simply tolerate. To my thinking this creates a blasphemy law.

Your hag comment amused me. I am not sure the Hag book would be your thing. Time to Think is more your style and you will like Colonialism when it is published -- really interesting.

Have you listened to The Witch Trials of JK Rowling yet? The podcasts are really good. You will enjoy hearing JKR speak.

And my writing is coming on. I had to do the copy edits for the one coming out in Sept and then I had another look at this one. I managed to catch the copy editor out as they changed my blonde to blond but I was talking about the hair of a little girl and therefore blonde is correct. It is a rare word which in the English language which has a masculine and feminine ending. My editor went up to the head of copy editing and it came back that I was correct. Score one for me! I do appreciate what copy editors and how many times they catch my mistakes. As you know I type v quickly and sometimes miss words out.

I went back to basic structure to figure out why my current work in progress wasn't working and I *think* I have sorted it. I am usually not this indecisive.

Have a good one!

Started Hags and already laughing at the Fatal Attraction reference! That’s a whole discussion in itself!

Haha. YEAH! Score one for the "little guys." Had no ideer about blonde vs. blond.

As always, cogent discussion. Fortunately, we don't have blasphemy laws here. Yet. Unfortunately, one tends to get censored for WrongThink.

I hafta admit I haven't listened to the podcasts. I know I'm missing a lot, but I just don't have the patience to listen to them. I finished reading the book on kid's learning reading. The same author has a couple other books I intend to read. May even do it.

And, thank You for the tip. I took Hags off-a my list, which is unmanageable as it is. I don't say it often, but always goes without saying. Still.. Doesn't *hurt* to say TY for writing. :-)

Michelle,

I’d love to read your take on the football show host Gary Lineker and BBC DG, Tim Davie. Just erupting into full bloom this weekend. I don’t agree with Lineker’s statement on immigration but think he must be allowed to speak his thoughts on his personal social media. That the BBC seems just toadying for government is appalling. Of course UK has no first amendment so ....

Viewing figures significantly up for punditless show. My dh said it was great. He calls a lot of the pundits' drivel talking shite with Nicky Knight (a cricket pundit who witters)

The BBC should have the same rules for everyone who operates in news and sports. You can't have one rule for the top and overpriced talent and another for the people much lower down.

Lineker has pushed his luck for a long time. There are other people who can do his job adequately. He only got the job because the BBC decided Des Lynam should be allowed to do commercial things. Linekar has a good agent.

I'd rather they put the licence payers' fees into local news and radio rather than expensive pundits but that is just me.

It is such a Beeb story.
