So glad to hear there is progress being made in your Springer recall. If you come up with a cure for a mostly obedient 4 1/2 year old (a rescue from TiJuana)that can not resist the temptation of a squirrel streaking by on the rails of our boardwalk, please let me know.

Late in reading your stack today as was out in the Panhandle searching for sea turtle crawls, examining spent nest to see hatch rate, and searching for wayward babies looking for the ocean. Awesome morning.

I look forward to reading your links.

Also, Amazon informed me this morning that an author I follow is soon to have a book out. Congratulations.

Yes, A Viking Heir to Bind Them comes out at the end of the month. Thank you for noticing.

So fantastic about the sea turtles -- just sounds wonderful.

What you are talking about is a Stop command - -so a down or sit from a distance. I was able to do this with my Border collies. They used to help me round up the ducks at night and I needed them to stop on command and then go forward. It was useful when out walking as well.

A fully trained gundog waits for the command to chase/hunt -- although apparently you never call a dog off when in full chase mode as they won't listen. It is anticipating the behaviour and giving direction before it happens. (easier said than done). The website Totally Gundogs might have some ideas -- she has a section on stop whistle training. https://totallygundogs.com/introduction-to-stop-whistle-training/

With my Springer, I need to get the recall solid. He has a brilliant retrieve developing but...

Thanks for the stop link. We will work on it.

Just curious, do you hunt?

No I don't hunt or shoot. Hunting in the UK is of course riding to hounds. (The unspeakable in pursuit inedible. LOL -- they hunt around here, most are fine. I dislike it when the hounds suddenly decide to go into the garden as it disturbs my dogs.)

Because Paddy is a Springer, I thought he'd enjoy gundog classes more than agility.

Something to occupy his mind. And I didn't want him jumping until he was over a year.

Very interesting. I hope you will post pictures.

And yes, just a whole different concept of hunting. Growing up in the southern US, hunting(US)has been a way of life for some. I admire those who hunt to fill their freezers but have a hard time with those that trophy hunt so the whole riding to hounds would be a bit weird. Are they always in pursuit of a Fox? I guess I’d better read about it.

Paddy sounds like a lucky dog.

They are no longer in pursuit of a fox. They follow a scent trail now. (Many of them do get injured from falling off their horses which is why one of the spinal units in the country was in Hexham for many years...)

Foxes in many respects are vermin (I've lost too much poultry to hens and ducks to feel sorry for them) but when you had fox hunting, many of the farmers had reasons to ensure a plentiful supply of healthy foxes which helped wildlife in general. Now they use other methods to get rid of them and the wildlife in general suffers. (for example they get rid of the cover they used to have for the fox which also sheltered birds) It is all unintended consequences.

It is about getting the balance right -- I believe term now being bandied is regeneration rather than rewilding.

Hello Northumberland! This is America returning Your call.

I savor Fridays because-a Your posts, Ma'am. Always a pleasure. But can only SMH. "JEDI"? These B corps are another stain of the Woke religion, as far as I can tell. Of course Coutts debanked Nigel Farage, in part, because of the B corps status. Only logical, from that B corps POV. From any rational POV? Despicable. I still can't get over it. And can only apologize, on behalf of America, for exporting more Woke garbage over to You all across the pond.

Thank You for the briefing by the Free Speech Union. Gotta love 'em. I downloaded it for later perusal. Also enjoyed the beginning of the article from PEN America. This from the Freedom to Read document:

"Every silencing of a heresy, every enforcement of an orthodoxy, diminishes the toughness and resilience of our society and leaves it the less able to deal with controversy and difference."

And here we are. And I wonder if this still applies?

"2. Publishers, librarians, and booksellers do not need to endorse every idea or presentation they make available. It would conflict with the public interest for them to establish their own political, moral, or aesthetic views as a standard for determining what should be published or circulated.

I quoted #3 also, but as I continued reading, I'd just hafta quote the Freedom to Read in it's entirety. TY for the link, Michelle.

I was glad to see Joanna Cherry get her day. She's great.

You're great, too, Michelle. Always a pleasure. Hope writing is going well, and Your training continues on the upswing. :-)

The Freedom to Read statement should be much wider known. It is 70 years old. It is just brilliant.

PEN America is calling for a recommitment -- going beyond simply a re-signing which all the major publishers did. It would be lovely to think that something came of that. The Booklash article is long but it does show the toxicity that has started surround publishing. I understand the intent behind the Own Voices campaign but when it stifles and results in a purity spiral then that is bad.

I thought the B Lab thing interesting, and worth seeing what is going on in the US.

Writing is going fine. I just need to be more focused.

TY for reply. You're right.

I've been having some *severe* problems focusing properly. I've been making a half-hearted attempt to obtain some computer skills lately. It seems there are always shiny baubles to look at. Sheesh!

But glad to "hear" the writing is going well, in spite of all.
