Hello Northumberland! Good to see Ya. Another fine roundup.
Also good to see Israel got the Butcher. That was interesting about the Islamic Republic.
Here's to hoping Kemi wins. But real sorry to see the ECB ruling. How idiotic. And that *was* an interesting piece on the anti-woke billionaires funding education.
I'm glad to hear about Your discovery of freezing apples. And it was interesting hearing about Your bees. Paddy looks good, as always. Wishing You luck on the writing.
I thought it was so interesting to see the echoes from 1980. And the Siege is a good read. How negotiations work and what the aims are was also interesting. You can see this playing out in the ME -- it is a case of which side gives in first. The US and the UK's calls for ceasefires are understandable (they don't think it is actually going to happen) if they are stalling for time. It was interesting to see how the ME ambassadors reacted as well. The Iraqi one wanted to be the one on the negotiations because of course it was all an Iraq inspired plot.
Team Kemi here so I do hope she wins.
The freezing apples was such a d'uh moment but I had not considered it before this year. Still better late than never.
It was cold at the beginning of the week and then we had the Rain (I assume a tail end of a hurricane) and now it is mild again. I have brought all the tender plants in though.
It is v much thank God for Israel's courage of their convictions.
Having read the Siege now, I don't know if some of the ceasefire stance has been a negotiating position, stalling for time or simple appeasement.
Of course everyone wants a ceasefire, but that can only realistically happen after all the hostages are released and the capability to wage war/commit atrocities like 7 Oct has been destroyed. Israel has been quite clear on its objectives and it is allowed to defend itself.
Anyone who is trying to engineer a ceasefire before those objectives have been achieved is engaging in appeasement.
Last year, I read the FT profile of Sinwar and realised what psychopath he was. There are a few others in Hamas leadership as well. I am not sure what it is about the Palestinian psyche which has led to the veneration of Sinwar, and indeed earlier to Abu Nidal or why such people are allowed such power by the populace but it happened. (I know that Hester Stanhope back in the early 19th century was warned the area was v unstable bandit country with ruthless and cruel leaders, but she did manage to carve home for herself. Stanhope was great btw -- saw Beau Brummell for the fraud he was). Mark Clark in an address to the Fifth Army in Jan 1944 said that countries often get the leaders they deserve, but I personally think the Palestinians deserve far better leaders -- ones who care about the people they serve rather than killing those they feel have slighted them.
The violence and fanatical terrorism of Palestinian leaders as well as seemingly a large percentage of the Palestinian population, goes so many generations back, I'm not sure how that can be changed even though alot of good people have certainly tried very hard to do so. Here is a brief historical tutorial from Nick Freitas that he posted shortly after Oct 7 last year and I think it helps to understand how entrenched this fanaticism and cruelty really is and why many Muslim countries may support Palestiinian leaders from a distance, but none of them actually want Palestinians to immigrant enmasse into their own countries.
I will watch with interest. Because yes one can always hope for good leaders but on past experience, the Palestinians seem to want cruel fanatics or at least are willing to tolerate them in a way that many other countries will not.
I remember an interview with the palestinian son of a hamas leader where the son said that if Palestine did not have Israel to hate, they would simply devolve into seperate warring groups and kill each other. I recall that the Hamas apologist woke lady he was talking to, was so taken aback she simply didn't know what to say.
Good morning and thank you for the news roundup. Your links are always very informative. Grateful that you sent your stack out early as I can start with that one before the early morning walk and 6AM arrival of others.
Paddy is how old now? The fact that you invested so much time in his early years has surely paid off.
The fall winding up of the orchard bees and garden is part of life’s cycle. A lovely time.
Because the staffers are going over under their own steam and volunteering. You have had people from Reform going and 'volunteering' for the GOP and Trump as well.
And you have had the opposite in the UK election from what I understand.
“ Staff were also emailed on Aug 2 and asked if anyone would be willing to travel to the US to “help our friends across the pond elect their first female president”.”
Being the first of anything I suppose is a goal. I do not see it as a goal though if the candidate is totally unqualified. Her staff is now claiming that her interview on Fox was an ambush. Why? Because she was asked questions that she should have answered long ago? She did not answer one single question. I was surprised the Bret Baier asked her real questions because he has never hidden his disdain for Trump-but real questions he asked her.
It is actually discriminatory to be going on about the first female anything. Given that both sexes are eligible for the position, shouldn't people be going for the most competent person? Would Harris not be considered competent and worthy if she had been born male? And Labour still have to elect their first female leader for the overall party btw (Scotland I believe has had a v forgettable one)
“Would Harris not be considered competent and worthy if she had been born male?”
I guess we all answer that question differently but imo I think not. I do have friends that have flocked to see her and my only conclusion is that the kool-aide is very potent.

TY, as always, Michelle.
Lovely to see you as always JT.

Thanks for the extra info on Sinwar, Yay Israel!

Also what a great pic of Badenoch and DeSantis.

Thank you for all that you add.
You are welcome.
Paddy was 2 in July. I think the time I spent was well worth it.
I'm curious: how is it legal for Labour to be involved in the American election?
Because the staffers are going over under their own steam and volunteering. You have had people from Reform going and 'volunteering' for the GOP and Trump as well.
And you have had the opposite in the UK election from what I understand.
I personally think it is a mistake for all.
My instinct is that this should be hella illegal.
I am not overly happy about it either. I think it can really backfire.

I thought this article v good on the subject: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/10/18/theres-nothing-wrong-with-an-old-boys-club/ or https://archive.ph/GYCmZ
