And for Allison mainly but other people might be interested. The Palace has just released a photograph of the late Queen and the Royal children from last summer. Of course the Sussex children are not there because they did not go to Balmoral. https://archive.is/3eOoK
And here we get to see the REAL Michelle. Wondrous. And this is REAL:
“As a child, you don’t have the same rights as an adult,” said a Whitehall source. “A child cannot change gender.”
Miriam Cates is a breath of fresh, minty air.
And Lionel Shriver! :
"I didn’t choose to be born American. There are worse places to be from and I was not responsible for slavery. I didn’t kill any Indians. Everyone has to be from somewhere and actually, **that shame is perhaps the main thing that I should have felt ashamed for.** Because it is a false pride in being so illumined and it’s an empty pride. And frankly, from the outside, it is unattractive. We don’t really like people who are ashamed of where they come from. **It’s a kind of betrayal and it’s a lie. It’s as if you can repudiate that which cannot be repudiated. It’s also a denial of fact, of physical reality.** I was born in the United States in a little town called Gastonia, North Carolina: that is a fact. A fact, and I can’t live it down, and for me to feel that I have to is, well, shame on me."
I requested "The Mandibles" from the library. Also added her non-fiction "Abominations: Selected Essays from a Career of Courting Self-Destruction." There's a copy of that in the local library, so hopefully will get that one real quick.
Last, but certainly not least: Hope the writing is going well, Michelle. I'm having memory problems, or maybe I haven't woke up yet. (Oooops! "Awakened!" ;-)
Which book did You send the partial on? Wasn't it Your latest historical fiction? If You mentioned what it was about I forgot. Or maybe I'm thinking it was from the Viking period. Don't know for certain.
At any rate, wishing You best and, as always, appreciate Your column. TYTY!
The partial is my latest historical romance -- so set in the Viking era. I am working on my first draft of the fictionalized account of Janet and Edward R Murrow's marriage.
Lionel Shriver is great, isn't she?
And just in this morning: Just in this morning. The UK Justice Minister Dominic Raab has resigned over bullying allegations. When he was Secretary of State for the Foreign Office he went on holiday and stayed on holiday during the start of the Afghanistan Airlift. It is good to see him get his comeuppance. His rather self serving resignation letter in full: https://archive.is/4iv20
Hm. I saw in Raab's resignation letter that he claimed he didn't do anything wrong.
And that video of Megyn Kelly! TYTY, Michelle. That was an *outstanding* catch. I'm gonna listen to it again right now. Was better the second time! You GO girl! (haha ;-)
Anyroad, when do You expect to hear about the partial. Is there some question whether it'll be accepted? Well, of course there is. But from prior experience, do You feel pretty good about it, Michelle?
Me? I've been pretty lazy myself. Read John Scalzi who writes SciFi. Some more serious stuff, but I'm not killin myself. I read a few Substacks this week, but didn't have any urge to comment on them.
Finally: Best o' luck on the biography of my cousin (53 times removed ;-)..
I am going to have to follow up with my agent -- she tries hard but sometimes get Overtaken By Events. She was supposed to get back to me re the partial a week or so ago. She is a good agent, just overwhelmed.
I think eventually it will be accepted, it is a matter of making sure it is right.
Glad you enjoyed the Kelly video, I thought you would.
Do You ever read SciFi, Michelle? Have any authors You recommend. It'll take me a bit to get through all of M Scalzi's books, but I'm always looking for more authors.
Come to think on it, don't restrict Yourself to SciFi. (Granted, I still haven't gotten to Nigel Biggar's book. It's a long one of deep issues. But such a nice problem to have. :-)
I read all sorts. I have not been reading a lot of Sci Fi recently. I used to read Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov a long time ago. I must read Stephan Theaker as I hear he is quite good as well as being a nice person.
I am currently in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan which is fantasy. Brandon Sanderson who I really rate finished the series off after Jordan died.
I could stand to read more Heinlein. I think the only ones I've read are Starship Troopers (recently) and Stranger in a Strange Land (decades ago). Recommend any in particular?
I can't say I've heard-a M Theaker, but then I haven't heard of a lotta people.
I read Wheel of Time a fair bit ago. Loved it and Love Fantasy more than SciFi, actually. I've read something of Brandon Sanderson (besides wheel of time), I believe. All good.
I just read Ursula K Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness, which I s'pose is SciFi. Or maybe it's more Fantasy that's set in the future. Don't know. Just know that I read the 50th Anniversary version with a good Introduction by somebody or other. Had a lousy Afterword written by a "non-binary trans" individual who tried to claim the gender issues involved in the book related to trans crap. Likely story. Book was written right when Second Wave Feminism was going on. The Afterword ended along the lines of "It's all about stories. We can just tell a different story." Do You recall the phrase "Don't tell stories" meaning lies? I almost didn't read the book because I read the Afterword first.
Sure glad I didn't make that mistake. I consider it one-a the best books I've read for a long while.
And for Allison mainly but other people might be interested. The Palace has just released a photograph of the late Queen and the Royal children from last summer. Of course the Sussex children are not there because they did not go to Balmoral. https://archive.is/3eOoK
I really miss her. I know I’m not the only one!
The Princess of Wales will come into her own. But I know what you mean.
I didn't know the King and Queen were that old. Nor that the Queen is a little older. TY.
Ah! Another great line-up, Ma'am.
And here we get to see the REAL Michelle. Wondrous. And this is REAL:

indeed.
