The sacking of Louise Haigh from Government for serially lying reminds me of Tim Walz, with his own hypocritical disdain for the truth, although in his case it was the voters who barred him from office.

I’ve been hoping to return to Ireland, but I wonder how widespread is the problem that tourists can’t find places to stay because immigrants are filling them up. This is also a problem in pockets of US “sanctuary cities,” where illegals have filled up hotels at taxpayers’ expense.

It makes the hotels more expensive. It can be a problem as there is v little available but if you book in advance you should be fine. There are some AirBnB outside the city centre which is easily accessible by bus (for example Rathgar)

This happened in NYC, too. Hotels filled with migrants so drive up prices of other hotels. According to the accounting follow in X, a lot of the migrants are now moving out of New York or moving into federally funded housing instead of the shelters paid for by the city. Mayor Adams stopped some of the freebies so now it’s believed that the migrants are moving to Canada and some just heading south to return home since there is a program to give them tickets. Day before yesterday there was a big bust in the Bronx of Venezuelan gang with a food deal of guns and ammo.

Also NYC cops dragged a lot of Free Palestine protesters away from the Macy’s parade yesterday where they were trying to block it. One bright note is that Maud Marron is going to be running against Alvin Bragg for Manhattan DA. If she wins it will be huge.

I saw that about the Pally-Allies and the parade. It is about the only sector Hamas etc have going for them. Fingers crossed for Marron.

I heard yesterday (from our daughter-in-law's brother, who came for dinner) that protestors were arrested at the parade. When I said "Good!" our son got a bit squiffy about "maybe they were protesting something appropriate to protest." I remarked that, given the things people usually protest about, that was unlikely, and we left it at that.

Maybe your son should hear about the schoolgirl in France who just admitted that her lies led to the beheading of the schoolteacher Paty. It is just absolutely jaw-dropping. There is a problem with taqiyya (or lies in a pious cause) within the Shi'a movement. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14127825/Muslim-schoolgirl-admits-lying-teacher-Islamophobic-led-decapitated-jihadist-suspended-two-days-worried-parents-angry.html

Europe is experiencing the results of being invaded. Some seem to be starting to wake up to it, but it seems to too late, in many cases.

And people STILL call them "migrants!"

It’s just like the ones in Europe who throw soup on paintings. They are a nuisance and solve nothing. I’m sure if they stopped the parade the war would stop. 😩

Many will be heading home because “new sheriff in town” Tom Homan is coming for those who’ve committed crimes after crossing the border.

Expand full comment
Michelle Styles's avatar

Crossing the border at an irregular crossing and staying in the US is a crime according to Homan. It will be interesting.

Mark Adams's avatar

I think he will deport many of those who crossed illegally but have mostly behaved while here, and arrest and prosecute those who’ve committed serious crimes while here.

Michelle Styles's avatar

I think that is where he will start as he has to begin somewhere.

For too long various countries have ben allowed to operate what can best be termed mass exodus operations to get rid of undesireables.

And Adam’s won’t stop them unlike other mayors in the US who are going to “resist.” See: Denver.

I had my Word Rant for the Day but "hypocrisy" in the context used also rubbed. RE: "hypocritical disdain for the truth" -- isn't "lying" easier to spell?

Expand full comment

Yes, but lying and hypocrisy aren’t always linked. In Walz’s case, they are.

I'll have to ponder that one. First pass says that the line, if there is one, is fine.

And this is the latest update on the Syrian fighting -- the rebels appear to be pushing towards Aleppo with Assad's army in retreat. Russia is currently occupied and stretch thin in Ukraine and Hezbollah is licking its wounds so I suppose it was as a good a time as any. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/11/29/syrian-rebels-capture-tanks-aleppo-assad-russia/ or https://archive.ph/5gR5z

I had no idea that Britain experienced a wave of immigration from Eastern Europe in the 19th century. As you noted, they seem to have melted into British culture without any of the drama that current immigrants are causing. It would be fascinating to research more about that. And it seems like a gap in historical fiction that would be well worth filling.

It is when the Jews basically return to England after being kicked out in the Middle Ages and populate the East End, amongst other Eastern European groups. You have the Italians going to Edinburgh and other places. Ice cream becomes dominated by Italians. It is fascinating.

I did write a historical mystery based on the Eastern Europe and the Great Game but it failed to sell. Such is life. One day, I should revisit it and do something with it.

I really enjoy your comments. It's so nice of you to share what is happening in the UK. I just subscribed to your substack, and later today, I will buy a book or two. I have an interest in anything British. I streamline BBC Select and True Royalty. My maiden name is Clough. My ancestors (father's side) arrived in the colonies with a original land grant from King George III. Being Catholic they settled in Maryland. Thanks again for all you do!

I am so pleased you enjoy this.

Clough is a v English name. Brian Clough who managed Nottingham Forest in the 1980s springs to mind.

And that is so interesting about your ancestors arriving with an original land grant. Given things like the Test Act of 1652, I can well understand why they did this. One of the last enfranchisments over here has been the Catholics in many ways (I converted to RC when my children were little as my family was worth a Mass)

It is what they are called over here. Some are v much -- we work for a few years and then return to our home country. A lot of Poles have done this. Some would very much like to be able to return to their home countries. Some are legal and some are illegal. In Ireland some of the problem has been caused by the Irish government welcoming the Ukrainians without considering that the war might last beyond Christmas 22 and thus not making proper provisions.

What you say is true but of what? Five percent, maybe? A highball estimate, IMHO of the population involved?
