Agatha Christie and the case of the overly sensitive sensitivity reader. Her books have been altered to better reach the modern reader. . It flatters to deceive. Christie’s original words described the world as she saw it, using the language which was appropriate for that time. And yes, some of it is very dated for today’s reader. That is fine. She was not writing for today’s reader. Society was very different 100 hundred years and thank goodness it has altered and people would not say certain thing or describe people in that fashion. But it is Orwellian to alter the words to suit today’s reader. Shall we alter Jane Austen, Emily Bronte and Charles Dickens as well?
