It is the name for looking at everything through 21st century lenses as opposed to contextualization when dealing with 'problematic' texts. Some people therefore insist you use modern words in a historical text. One author was not allowed to use the word plump in a Regency as it might offend someone, for example.
It is so apposite to the current milieu of Western culture. And that culture is rapidly transforming into a suicide pact. The World suffers as a result and the supposed waifs being protected by these rules are ever further confined to the wastelands of society.
Someone, no doubt famous, has said that the cure for bad/hate/offensive speech is more speech. Or something like that. I hope you never give up speaking. JKR, too. And many others.
if I had a "voice" I'd speak. Sadly, I'm just another old guy yelling at clouds. Or so my Millennial and Gen Z kids tell me. I am hoping that the lessons taught, intentionally, by osmosis, and accidentally, during the brief years of my influence as a parent, will some day out and they, like in my own youth and later maturity, come to grips with what really matters. So far, I have not detected in them any belief that less speech is a good thing so I still have hope.
I'll give some Thanksgiving next Thursday for that hope.
Awwww... I'm SO sorry, Ma'am. It's hard for me not to say that evil incarnate has won instead-a good people. I guess that's a bit extreme, but this so-called Society of Authors is *really* extreme.
I'm glad You got a small voice in the proceedings. Should-a figured You wouldn't be heard out. That's the very problem.
I agree with everything M. Alison "said." But one thing i didn't understand: Why You cancel debit card. Was it from SoA? Next question raised in article is whether there's any chance the industry would support a second group made up of Youse who are actually sane?
In any event, I hope You can lick Your uncalled-for wounds, and live to fight (or at least write) another day. :-) And, as Alison said, we're proud of You, Michelle.
I thought about this some more. I still can't believe they didn't even complete the investigation before the vote. No wonder it turned out like it did. But, actually, You should be somewhat happy about the Tim Tate's letter.
I am happy about the letter as at least it is out in the open. There are moves afoot. I am also pleased that I resigned as I have no wish to be part of an authors' union which does not value freedom of expression.
You have perfect timing. I got the email four minutes after returning for very short walk. It was -5.6° C with a wind-chill of -9.4. Brrrrr.
But not as frigid as this Abie Longstaff. Not that there was anything *impartial* in her closing down the inquiry. No. Couldn't be. What else needs be said to condemn the guilty? Dunno what other confirmation would be required.
Still, I hope You can put this trash away long enough to have some good times writing. :-)
I’m so sorry it was a loss but I feel as if it’s an important step to something different and better. Once a place is too far gone brining it back is next to impossible. Your bravery is amazing.
So the was a strong possibility that Harris would have been found wrong, and her probable supporter kicked the investigation out before that could happen. I’m glad he published that letter and resigned.
Had they not prevented me from speaking, there is a possibility that they might not have found in her favour and certainly members of the Man Comm knew that there was serious and material evidence of poor governance when they entered the agm and no one attempted to speak up.
But, hey, I learned a new word: presentism. Thanks.
And good luck.

And then this happened: https://timtate.co.uk/category/news/ -- you need to read the letter. It is a breaking story shall we say?
I thought about this some more. I still can't believe they didn't even complete the investigation before the vote. No wonder it turned out like it did. But, actually, You should be somewhat happy about the Tim Tate's letter.
You're totally Vindicated.
Best wishes this Sunday, Michelle. :-)

Oh! You resigned! I hope that is a weight of Your shoulders. Is it?
Proud. Me and You should be of Yourself.
Only thing else I can add is I hope some journalist picks up the story. If M Tate himself doesn't write it up.

YOu need to read this letter from a man who has just resigned from the Man Comm. It is quite eye-opening. https://timtate.co.uk/category/news/

That other link in his letter said over 80% of the votes were in her favor.
Had they not prevented me from speaking, there is a possibility that they might not have found in her favour and certainly members of the Man Comm knew that there was serious and material evidence of poor governance when they entered the agm and no one attempted to speak up.
The whole thing is awful. What does the future hold with this organization? Will you continue your membership?
I have resigned as have a number of other people -- over the remarks on free speech.
Thank you!
